John Lennon sees a UFO

Imagine All the (Little Green) People

On the cover of John Lennon’s album Walls and Bridges, the following odd inscription can be seen: “On the 23rd Aug. 1974 at 9 o’clock I saw a U.F.O.” Was the former Beatle being all metaphorical and obscure? Not at all! In fact, according to him, this is exactly what happened. He claims that on this exact date, he was lying naked in his bed when he ‘got an urge’ and went out onto his balcony where he saw a large, circular object with a rim that was covered in white lights, plus a blinking red light on the top.

Even though this incident took place during Lennon’s ‘lost weekend’ when he was separated from Yoko Ono and regularly binging on drink and drugs, he promised the sceptics that he was completely sober when the sighting took place. Though he took photos with two different cameras, no pictures emerged. He called the police and was told that they’d received many similar calls. With no explanation forthcoming, Lennon did the only thing he could. He left a cryptic message about it on the inside of his next record. Let’s hope those interstellar visitors are fans.
