Normandy
The Allied troops landed on five Normandy beaches early on the morning of 6 June 1944, after the airborne infantry had secured key bridges and crossroads inland. Over 1,000 British bombers pummelled the Nazi defences in Normandy as Rommel celebrated his wife's birthday at their German home. The conditions were so bad that day that the Navy had told Hitler's commander in France there was no chance of an invasion.
