The back of an unidentifiable dictator as he salutes in a tunnel

Dictators' Hideouts

Wednesdays at 9pm

Throughout the past century, dictators held Europe in an iron grip. Yet, despite their unquestioned control, paranoia and distrust corrupted their minds. In order to secure their authoritarian rule, numerous bunkers, palaces, and hideouts sprung up around Europe. From Stalin’s secret underground super bunkers in Moscow to Hitler’s clandestine Riese headquarters to Ceausescu’s People’s Palace – the world’s heaviest building, among many others, Dictators’ Hideouts explores the dark confines of these megaprojects, investigating their mysteries, analysing their costs, and testing their efficacy against an all-out attack. Each episode will focus on the private sanctuary of a different European autocrat – Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Albanian 'strong man' Enver Hoxha, Joseph Stalin, Nicolae Ceausescu and Viktor Yanukovych.
