On this day:
Indestructible! Unless you destruct them
On March 8th 1979, at Phillips audio headquarters in Eindhoven, the world’s leading audio journalists (yes they do exist) met to have their tiny minds, and to a certain extent their tiny ears, blown. The aural whizz kids at the company previewed the first ever prototype compact disc and player for the journos, with recorded music featuring no background hisses or crackles for the first time ever. (What was played at the event appears to have been lost in the mists of time, but I’m hoping it was something by Shakatak). Soon compact discs would change the world of music forever - or at least until everyone decided they preferred vinyl and started buying that again.
