On this day:
When You’re Ready, Please Drive Off The Startled Pensioner
If you love the sound of a heavily stained clipboard being slammed onto the dashboard of a Honda Civic, then prepare to get violently excited! It was on the 13th of March 1935 that driving tests were first introduced to Great Britain.
Prior to this, gadabouts and lounge lizards who could afford a motorised vehicle just used to jump in, push buttons and press levers until they ended up in a ditch. But thanks to the snappily named Road Traffic Act (1934) government sanctioned experts glowered at you from the passenger seat while smelling slightly of Deep Heat. Hurrah for progress!
