On this day:
From The People Who Brought You Naked Keith Chegwin
March 30th 1997 was a momentous day in the world of broadcasting as Britain’s television’s options were increased by a fifth with the launch of spanking new outlet Channel 5. At 6pm, the viewing public were transfixed and then slightly confused as the Spice Girls sang the old Manfred Mann hit 5-4-3-2-1, presumably as this was a song that featured the numeral five. Other possibilities might have been Five Years by David Bowie, Five Minutes to Midnight by Boys Like Girls or the theme tune to Hawaii 5-0. Then they showed Family Affairs.
