U-Boat Wargamers – Season 1, Episode 1
Admiral Karl Dönitz, head of the Nazis’ U-Boat fleet, brought Britain to the brink of starvation in January 1943 by ruthlessly destroying almost one thousand of their merchant ships. Gilbert Roberts, a retired wargamer, was tasked by the Royal Navy to come up with the answer to combat Dönitz’s tactics. He turned to the Women’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) to act out naval battles on a linoleum floor, using chalk and wooden model ships.
U-Boat Wargamers tells the story of Roberts and his extraordinary team of women. Episode one begins with Roberts and Vera Matthews building out their crew, which includes Jean Laidlaw, one of Britain’s first female chartered accountants.
